on the driver side just before the fuel tank there is a little metal box with tubes coming out of it. what is this?

What year?

If it's a 97+ I believe that is the fuel vapor recovery / evap system.

so if i have a evap code and its a big leak think it could be that and my jeep is a 2000 cherokee sport

Could be any number of hoses or other parts on the emissions system including the box.
