Auto tranny safety switch, is there one?

Is there something similar to a clutch interlock switch on these auto tranny's? Occasionally I'll get in, turn the key - everything will come on but nothing will let power to the starter. Freaked me out at first, but, I've learned that on the rare occasion it happens, if I just put the shifter into R and back to P, it'll start right up. I assume that there is a switch somewhere going bad and needs to be replaced before I'm left stranded...I just don't know what it's called!

Neutral safety switch. Do a search for it. You will be able to find a thread on how to clean it. HTH. JIM.

If it won't start in Park, you can also use Neutral. Just a temporary work around.

Careful removing the switch, as it's expensive to replace. ($149 at www.teamcherokee.com)
