98 starter compatable with 99?

I dropped a 99 engine in my 98 a couple weeks back but the starter is always rattling and sounds/feels like grinding. Sometimes it doesn't start at all. Could it be that the 98 starter isn't compatible with he 99 flywheel? spacing issue?
The stater is new so i am not sure if that is the problem

cross reference the part number on rockauto or napa.com.

other that, have you checked for proper installation? could be loose bolt or its not seated proporly.

Just an update for the starters. I bought a 94 model starter installed it in a 99 with no issues. My wife has been driving it for about 5 days now. Plus it saved me about 100 dollars.
