Might work, might not. If a new one isn't too expensive and you plan on keeping the vehicle, I'd go new.

$75 new. i do plan to keep this xj for a while.

for an 89, sure, rock it and see if it works. I wouldn't do this for a 96+ though, since the FPR is on top of/inside the fuel pump assembly and much more of a pain to replace again if it ends up not working...

called around and autozone had one for $52. went ahead and bit the bullet for a new one. it came with the new line orings and stuff too.
