I have a NP242 in my 99 sport and when in FT 4WD I am getting a very loud pop and binding/tire skidding when making sharp left turns.

I would expect this in PT 4WD but not in FT. The dash is indicating I am in FT 4WD but maybe it is wrong?

I would try adjusting the linkage. It may still be corect enough to trip the sensor into saying FT but could be off enough to not go in properly. You may have a bad U joint also.

your chain in your tcase might be loose. i had the same problem, then my tcase took a dump on me.

i was having the sam popping/ binding noise in 4WD then is started doing it in 2WD. For mine it was the front axle u joints. Just wanted to calrify not the front drive shaft u-joint but the axel u-joints. mine is good as new after replacing.

Never hurts to verify fluid level in t-case. May as well change it if it's been a while, just a small amount of Dex-III tranny fluid.
