best rear end for 96 xj

That depends on a lot of factors. I'm not being rude but this issue has been extensively covered and if you search for it you'll find a buttload of info on axles and things.
What's the lift/tire/engine?
 
Definitely a Rockwell from a front end loader.

What's your intention? Do you want to get a stronger axle? Different gear ratio? Better ground clearance? Wider stance? All/some of the above?

The best cheap *stock* axle (bolt-in) is going to be a late-96 or later 8.25" corporate, as it'll have 29 spline axle shafts. Or an XJ 44 from the late 80s if you want bolt-in but don't mind it costing more. There are a million other choices if you don't mind some fab work.
