Question about timing

If the timing is off a little will it cause a rough idle? If so how can I adjust it, should I advance or retard it. Ive never done this on a jeep.
 
So, year/engine, describe conditions: hot, cold, all the time? Have you done anything lately, i.e., changes, mods, played submarine?
