no the transfer case uses ATF i use dextron III in mine

ax-15 - 2.5 quarts.. I recommend Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90

Can you explain why you use motor oil and not a 75w gear oil?

motor oil, depending on weight has a similar viscosity to gear oil.

yes it is.
gl-5 is another story.
gear lube uses different numbers then motor oil for the same viscosties.

Agree.
You can spend $20 for a quart of Chryco special gear oil, or $8 for Pennzoil Synchromesh, or $?? for a quart of MT90; I prefer to spend $4 for synthetic 10W30--yellow metal safe and easier shifting particularly in cold weather.

I also use Mobil1 10-30 for the last 6 months or so. everything seems to be fine and shifts well.
