Self Adheasive Daimond plate... door panels?

I have an '87 2dr.. with no door panels.. I'm having a hard time finding a decent set in the J-yard. I was thinking about making some out of light gauge diamond plate. I knew I had seen some with self adhesive on the back that is used for floors.. this site has some 24'' x 24'' sheets. Still kinda pricey..

Stupid idea? This would be cool stuff for your cargo area if nothing else.

Or how about this: http://www.empirechromeshop.com/p-5932-chrome-plastic-decorative-diamond-plate-24-x-47-roll.aspx

Why not just buy a crappy set at the j/y and have an upholstery shop recover them? It's really not that expensive...

The problem is the the card board backing gets wet... I do have a passenger panel that has been amarturely recovered and it looks like crap. The door panel really needs to have some kind of "pattern" in it.. if its all one solid color..all smooth it looks crappy. I thought about putting diamond plate under the viynl.. to give it a custom look...

I would use black or grey 1/8" or 1/4" UHMW before I would use diamond plate. Not quite so "bling", much MUCH more durable (it'll laugh and bounce back instead of denting), and not as cold to the touch. Easier to clean fully, too.

EDIT: that being said, I am probably doing 1/8" non-polished diamondplate in my trunk area once I get around to pulling the carpet and the mostly gone floorboards.
