I'd like to drill and tap various things for use as shift knobs. Other make/tranny shift knobs, household objects, cat skulls . . .

What's a 97 AX15 shift handle/knob thread size? And how does the factory 5-spd knob come off, just twist it CCW?

1) Should be M10-1.5, it's a fairly common shift knob thread size for anything bigger than a Honda.

2) There should be a jam nut with two flats on the sides - crank that a bit loose, then the knob should turn right off. When installing the new knob, don't crank it quite all the way down - leave enough room to back the jam nut down and then turn it up against the knob. You don't need much room - you should see 1 to 1.5 threads under the jam nut.
