How different are these tires?

Hey,

I'm picking out some new tires for my daily driver - a stock jeep Cherokee. It's a street vehicle, and I don't do any towing.
The tire I want comes in different load ratings, and I would like to understand the pros & cons of each of them.

101R and 108S(XL)

How different will these tires feel? How much rougher the ride be on the XL? Will the stiffer tire handle any better? Are there any other considerations? Which is best for an XJ?

Thanks

I just bought my second set of those tires. Great traction on and off road, quiet and smooth running. I got the standard passenger tires both times (not LR "C" and "C"'s don't have a mileage or hazard guarantee). First time was 235/70 for stock height but 1 in. more width than 215's. This time I bought 235's for more height. TireRack gave me a call before shipping reminding me that they might rub the lower control arms (they do at full lock). I said "That's fine, I have an adjustment hammer." They arrived the next morning and I'm happy!

A couple of personal observations from having others mount my tires.
Get short valve stems to keep from breaking them off.
Adjust the pressure to around 30 lbs. after the installers inflate them to 40 pounds.
Loosen and properly re-torque all the lug nuts so you can change a tire if you ever have a flat.

There's not a huge difference between an XL tire and a Load Range C tire in this case. They're both going give a harder ride than with a standard load tire, especially since the XJ is so light compared to full size SUVs. I'd go with a standard load tire unless you're going to be hauling a LOT of weight in your XJ.

The XL tire has a harder sidewall so that you can (theoretically) corner harder without the side of the tire flexing under lateral stress. Load Range C tires of this size are usually 6-ply versus 4-ply for standard load, which makes them heavier and harder (harder ride, slower acceleration, longer braking distance)

However, while the XL tire might sound good, if you manage to corner hard enough to gain any benefit from the stiffer sidewall, you will probably roll your XJ. XL tires are really meant for high performance vehicles with a lower center of gravity than the XJ does. Stick with standard load tires unless you want your ride quality to suffer. You won't see better performance with either XL or LRC tires.

EDIT: Here's the link to the Standard Load version of that tire: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...Model=Destination+A/T&partnum=375SR5DESTATOWL

I would recommend the Brdigestone Dueler A/T's over the Firestones, but to each his own.
