Timing off about 18 degrees

So I just put a new motor together and had the tranny rebuilt on my 1997 XJ

I was told that the timing was hard to get right on these, so I paid tons of attention to getting the distributor in just right (at least I hoped).

So it started right up and idles fine. I have about 300 mile on it so far and it just seems to lack in HP.

So I just checked the the timing with a timing light(advance) and it's reading about 18 degrees off at Idle (it actually fluctuates about 2 degree).

Can someone help? I tried searching the forum and have not come up with anything that is close...

thanks. :geek:

If it starts and runs well, the distributor is almost certainly in right. The engine computer controls timing once it's going, and no adjustment will change that unless you misadjust the distributor so far out of range that it can't.
