my xj will start right away when it is cold. but if i turn it off and then try to turn it back on it will take forever, and about two tries. IT will only start normally again once it has been sitting for a long time. The more I turn it off and on, the longer it takes to start. Where should I start diagnosing this? I thinking CPS, but if the CPS fails then it wont start at all right??

by chance, is your CPS getting old? you might try unplugging and then replugging it (the harness should be around the rear of the intake manifold where it plugs in if you aren't familiar)-if that makes it start, it's probably the CPS. i've had those kill my xj and then be fine after a while.. but they would tend to deteriorate until they wouldn't do anything at all.
