Battery meter inside is showing 9.

yesterday was showing 12, added a cb directly into the "batt" space on the inside fuse panel, but cb is not on.

starts fine, everything works. suggestions?

XJ voltage gauge doesn't read from the battery, it is essentially "tail-end-Charlie" so its readings are effected by all the loads.

That said, check the battery static voltage across the terminals, should be about 12.5v, then start the engine and measure the voltage--with everything turned off--and it should be about 14v.

If not, then charge the battery overnight (good) or 24 hours (best). While charging, clean both ends of your battery cables, and renew all of the grounds--dipstick tube, back of head to firewall, etc. Once the battery has fully charged have it load tested. If it passes then drive it to a parts store and have them test the alternator on the vehicle.

Post back with what you find.

found the issue. under the alt is a 2 wire plug. plug was hanging. plugged in and reading 14 again. the arm that secures seemed to be up to far, heated it up and bent it down. arm fine now, but plug seems to be a tad bit to large, arm still wont secure on the clip.

isn't that the field wiring on the alt? surprised it worked at all without it - or maybe it wasn't! 9 volts is pretty low even for just running off the battery.

PS - if you are ever alarmed by your voltmeter make sure your heat/air/blower is turned off and recheck it. Mine drops like two volts when I turn it on (because of the reasons Joe cited)
