Squealing belt

I have changed the belt, water pump, power steering pump, and idler pully. Xj has 97,000 miles on it. Belt seems tight enough and all other accessories seem good. The belt just keeps squealing @ Random times? Anybody else encounter this problem?

I bet it's not so random. Probably when the AC kicks on.

Tighten the belt more. I turn the AC on and turn the headlights on, tehn adjust it until the biatch stops squeeling. Then I tighten it a bit more.

tighten and then if you are really up to it get some belt dressing after is stops squeling - my 99 and 97 both suffer from a little belt issue now and then - the belt dressing conditioned the belt and really helped the problem. before my belts looked and felt pretty dry but safe of course. just another option after u tighten

Get one of these from NAPA, very inexpensive

also discussed here including the NAPA part number.

says the spec is 170lbs for a belt that's been run. I think my squealing went away around 110 or 120 which still seemed very tight compared to the traditional "1/2 inch of slack" or twisting methods of measuring.

NO--the gates link is to the WRONG gauge, it doesn't go high enough.

You want the Kricket II gauge, available at rockauto.com:

Gates part number 91132, $14.78
