Aftermarket radio antennas?

I have a power antenna on my new rig and am pondering just getting a whole new antenna set-up to begin with. I CAN swap my power antenna off my old rig, but I rarely ever use the antenna as is so I have no use for the added electrical things that CAN go wrong.

So with that said, are there any reasons not to go with a small antenna in the stock location? And will universal aftermarket ones fit cleanly or will it be a mess?
