I just did some work on my first ever jeep, a 92 cherokee and had the
battery disconnected while I did it. Now the check engine light stays on,
code 12 at 55 no big deal but how do I get the light to go off.

Code 12 = battery disconnect
Code 55 = end of codes

Try disconnecting BOTH cables from the battery and holding them together for 15-20 seconds then reconnect.

neither of those codes cause the check engine light to be on! not sure why it is turning on?

x2 on removing the cables and holding together, that should clear the light.

Yes it will work on any obd 2 vehicle. However you'll get a p1000 code for monitors not complete. The MIL won't be on but that code can keep you from passing emissions. The p1000 goes away when all obd2 monitors are complete.
