electrical shorting or such

as i drive sometimes my gauge panel will completley die out. everything will read like its off. it kicks back on after a bit and usually after pressing the breaks? power locks sometimes cease to work one way. opens but doesnt lock, and the remote keys dont work ever

Year/engine/trans, any recent mods?

1999 xj sport ltd, Aisin-Warner AW-4 4-speed automatic - i believe, I6 no mods other than oil pressure sensor being changed and i had my stereo system jacked about a year ago, it was done slopy by some jackasses but i just slapped the stock unit back in. i dont know if stray wires behind the stereo could be culprets?
