They can definately be helicoiled, but for an application like that, where it will be disassembled and reassembled frequently, I would prefer a repair insert like a Keensert. These are solid inserts instead of a wound wire. I have had helicoils come out on the next disassembly. The wire can stick to the bolt. A Keensert (or other brand) insert is solid hardened steel with tangs that you stake into place after threading the insert into your oversize rethreaded hole. THe other thing is that they use standard taps, which are probably cheaper than a HC tap.
