I find that I sometimes need instant vehicle based shelter as I am always out in the woods camping and what not.Tonight I was out on the trail on my friends property and it started to sprinkle,He said wouldnt it be nice to have an awing or something?

This got me to thinking....wouldn't it be nice?

I was thinking of a rv based type(side mount on the roof rack)or hatch based type awning.
So how about it?Ideas?Pics?

Post them up!

Since, there has been no responses thus far, you may wish to do a Yahoo Search for Jeep Awning. Hope this helps you out.

I went to Dicks sporting goods store and got one of those Tailgating awnings. Ties to my roofrack and has the posts to keep it up on the other end. Works well, if your in grass, cause you have to spike the teathers to keep it tight. I got to figure out a good way to put it up on concrete yet.

thats pretty cool actually for $20, how well does it really hold up to wind etc.

For a retractable awning check out www.campinglab.com for a reasonably priced unit. You can spend a tad more on an arguably better built on a Fiamma etc from www.adventuretrailer.com

I took some Mil-Spec OD canvas puptents and made a rear awning, works good if you dont have a small trailer behind it. I'm about to build a new one that deploys off the side.

this is what i use. its a kelty. i got a smoking good deal on it about 3 years ago so i cant comlain.

in the picture we actually had a picnic table under it because it started to rain and it kept us dry.

As for the $20 awning i cant complain yet. Havent had it out in the rain, or wind. But just to keep the sun off ya for a few hours while you relax its great. I would like something much wider and stronger.

pm stumpxj... he has one for his xj

Saw this post and called my local Dicks, picked one up yesterday. Cant wait to try it out soon.

This isnt exactly instant but it was cheap. I used two OD GI puptent halves and a few poles/guylines to whip this up. Takes just a few minutes to setup/teardown.
