our base camp will be Mt Greylock state reservationin North Adams Ma, group site "Chimney" .. our first arrivals will be there mid afternoon on friday..
FROM THE EAST (boston):
take Rt 2 west, thru greenfield, continue thru the towns of shelburne, charlemont, and florida.. about 40 minutes or so.. after a long climb up a winding mountain rd you will come to a scenic overlook with a large white viewing platform on your right.. the Wiccam summit motel/restaurant on the right just past there is highly recommended.. continue west and you will wind down the other side of the mountain and around a hairpin turn.. as you come thru town you will pass a mcdonalds and a Big Y supermarket on your right.. pass a hillside cemetery on the left.. a short distance after that (1/4 mile??) you will start looking on your left for NOTCH RD.. there will be a small brown sign there directing you to the Mt Grelock State Reservation.. if you pass a small gas station on your right you went too far... follow notch Rd up thru a residential area.. bear left up-hill at a small Y in the road..and make a hard left at the next cross road by the reservoir.. continue up the moutain until you are near the top and come to a "stop sign" and a road to the right with signs directing you to the campground.. turn right (rockwell rd maybe?) its the only road there.. wind down the mountain a few miles and look for a SPERRY RD to the right with a sign for CAMPING.... turn onto sperry rd.. stop at the ranger shack and check-in and get directions to our site... the drive from the begining of notch Rd on Rt 2 is about 30 minutes alone..
FROM THE WEST:
Albany/Troy area..
Rt 2 east into massachusetts.. at the botttom of a long hill Rt 2 will turn left and join Rt 7 north toward Pownal, Vt and Williamstown, Ma... in the center of Williamstown Rt 7 will turn left and Rt 2 will go straight.. continue east on Rt 2... pass a stop and shop supermarket on your right.. about a mile past there the road will sweep around a curve to the right with a small gas staion on the left.. NOTCH RD will be on your right... follow as instructed in the previous directions...
FROM THE NORTH:
Bennington Vt, Rt 7...
follow Rt 7 south into wiliamstown Ma... it will meet Rt 2 at an off-set sort of rotary/intersection (no other way of describing it) turn left onto Rt 2 EAST and follow past the stop and shop supermarket.. follow previous directions for NOTCH RD
FROM THE NORTH:
Wilmington ,Vt.. Rt 8
follow Rt 8 south into massachusetts, in North Adams you will connect with Rt 2 near a dam/spillway... turn right DOWN the hill toward the Mcdonalds and Big Y previously mentioned and follow first set of directions from there..
FROM THE SOUTH:
Rt 8 masachusetts /Conneticut....
IF YOU ARE GOING DIRECTLY TO THE CAMP FIRST:
follow Rt 8 NORTH thru becket, hinsdale and into DALTON.. Rt 9 WEST will join Rt 8 and take you down the hill into Pittsfield... pass a large shopping center on your left.. after a few lights Rt 8 will turn right and Rt 9 will continue STRIAGHT.... FOLLOW RT 9 WEST... a couple miles up thru town you will pass a HESS gas station on the left... shortly after that you will coem to a set of lights with a lagre gas staion on your left.. TURN RIGHT at the light onto 1ST STREET... less than 1/4 mile up you will merge onto Rt 7 north (north main st)... follow a couple miles.. you will pass a large lake on your left.. pass a dunkin donuts onthe left and a few small stores on both sides of the road... aprox 1.5 miles up look for a road that forks to the right.. look for a sign for sTAtE RESERVATION.. and i think another may say BASCOMB LODGE... bear right... if you pass a mini golf place on the right you went too far... i belive this is NORTH MAIN st but not sure.. follow up to the next intersection and turn right onto GREYLOCK RD or ROCKWELL RD (cant remember which one, its the only road to the right....) this road will take you past the Mt Greylock Visitors center... continue past there.. follow this road up the mountain a few miles and look for a small spur road to the left with a CAMPING sign to the left... check in at the ranger shack..
IF YOU ARE MEETING US IN TOWN IN THE MORNING AT THE BIG Y:
follow the first few steps of the previous directions but TURN RIGHT WHERE RT 8 TURNS RIGHT AND SPLITS FROM RT 9.... follow Rt 8 north thru cheshire and adams.. in adams center you will turn LEFT at a light near a Mcdonalds with Rt 116 off to the right.. there is a Big Y at this light THIS IS NOT THE MEETING PLACE.... continue north on Rt 8.. pass a large quarry on the left. and a walmart on the right... you will come into North Adams and go up over a small bridge... the over pass in front of you is Rt 2.. go under the over pass and take first right.. this should be directing you to Rt 2 WEST... after you tun right here the Big Y shopping center is directly in front of you.. go stright into the parking lot...
