stock XJ winch

Thats kind of a dark picture but if some one makes one that will go on my stock bumper I know I'd pick one up. Any one know whats up with that?

There is a factory hidden winch mounting kit. I'm pretty sure it uses the towhook brackets and some other hardware. I saw it on one of the dealers part computers a few years back.

I have one on my 87xj. The system was designed for AMC by Ramsey and was available through Ramsey or a Jeep dealer for dealer intallation. It will accomodate a 6000# winch. I paid $120 for the mounting bracket, which mounts between and to the factory tow-hook brackets. If you look at the factory tow-hook brackets, they have two sets of holes punched in them. You move the brackets forward to the 2nd set of holes, which moves the bumper forward about 3inches. The mounting bracket bolts right up to the other set of holes. The kit comes with a templet to cut a hole in the bumper for intallation of a hawse(also included with the kit) to fair the hole. It also comes with plastic trim peices for the space between the bumper and the grill. Originally, I wanted to to install an 8000# winch but the Ramsey tech people told me 6000# was max design load(12000 with a snatch block). I think it slicker than snot and am real happy with it.

I got one. Found it on a dusty shelf in the back of the parts dept. at the dealer I work for. The parts guys said it had been on the shelf since around 1989, and I found it in 2000. I got it, for free, and installed it on my Dad's 89 with a 8000lb Ramsey winch. It took some grinding on the brackets to fit the bigger winch, but it turned out really well. The instructions I had said that it wouldn't work with the factory style tow hook brackets, but instead you needed the non-hook style bumper brackets and the extensions that came with the kit. My nephew wrecked that Jeep and I pulled the winch and mount off. I still have the kit, minus all the facia pieces that fill in the gaps that are left when the bumper is moved out for the winch. I found a picture that shows what the kit looks like from the front. Notice the plastic filler strips for the bumper gap.

The only problem I had was I didn't know where to mount the solenoid pack, so I just put it under the hood.

I did use it a few times....actually this was the first time I had ever used a winch.

That Yota had to be towed out the next day, they couldn't restart it after that little plunge. This was in Hungry Valley, CA a few years ago. Fun trip, the last big trip we took before my Dad passed away. He died exactly one year later to the day.

Last I heard it wasn't available any more, but I could be wrong. Wanna buy mine? You would need to fab up some fascia spacers, but I have all the hardware.

do you have pictures of the kit itself i would love to fab up somthing like that for my 96 or even find one from a dealer. Im planing on puting a front hitch on maby just mount winch to the top of the hitch and extend bumper?

What you want for it? And if the other guy buys it would you be willing to measure and draw the different pieces? That woudl be a great aftermarket kit for URF to build! :yelclap:

Did you get my PM?

I'm not only interested in the winch proper, but I'd be willing to engineer a mount as good as OEMR, if not stronger (I'd probably incorporate tow/recovery points, knowing me. I'm a firm believer that overkill is not misplaced in engineering...)

Let me know.

If any ones got one kicking around I'd love to pick one up... It seems like a much cheaper way to mount a whinch: instead of buying a whole new bumper for it.

Wow, got 4 PMs for people who want to buy the winch mount. I got the PMs and I am trying to figure out what I really want to do with this setup before making any deals. Since a few people asked about what the kit looked like and the dimensions, I thought I would just post a few pics I took tonight of the kit. I don't have any pics of the kit installed on a Jeep other than the ones I posted above, but here it goes.

This is the main piece that the winch attaches to. It goes inbetween the frame rails on the front of the XJ, behind the bumper.

This is a side view pic of the bracket. It is made of 1/4" thick 2"x2" angle iron with flat stock on the ends to attach it to the frame rails.

Overall dimensions are 32 3/16" x 7"

Here are the bolts that attach the winch to the bracket. The bracket sits flush up against the frame so the bolts are countersunk.
