Transmission rebuild cost????

Just wondering what would be an average cost for a tranny rebuild? It looks like thats what I have to have. The repair shop is quoting close to $1000, and I was wanting to know if this is about right or high?

Is it a manual or auto if its a manual dont pay that crap just find one out of junk yard or find someone whos upgrading plenty of people who are getting rid of their sticks....If its an auto thats not a bad price but you can still find them cheaper just make sure the input splines match up....I went thru that about 2 years ago and got screwed over by not one but 3 tranny shops in my area (all big name ones) and learned an important lesson it might take me longer but I can do it better....
Plus its really not hard to change out a tranny just make sure to get some ratcheting wrenchs for the tranny to t case nuts...

Should have said that it is an auto. I don't have the space or the time to do the work myself. Will be relocating right after the first, just wanted to know if I was getting screwed.

The Jeep has 130,000 miles on it, so I guess thats not bad.

I have 153K on my AW4 ... I'm curious: what's failing on your transmission that leads you to believe you need a new transmission ?

if that removed/installed that is not a bad price, but make sure u get a second opinion before you go through the whole ordeal, some tranny shops (most even) will just replace the fluid, and the filter, run it, if it works send u a 1000 dollar bill for a tranny re-build

I second the "what's wrong" idea - the AW4 is a simple and very solid box, and not much goes wrong with it. I've rebuilt two myself!

You don't need a whole lot of room to do the job - you need to get the thing out, and just some clear garage or shop floor will get it done for you. As long as you can keep everything halfway sorted, you will be in good shape. There are a could bridge pullers that are needed, but they can he made by hand with only a little effort!

From there, a reseal kit would be about $100, a "Master" kit (clutches and all "soft" parts) about $300, and you'd need a week-end to get the job done.

So, what's wrong with yours? I've not known much to go wrong with the AW4 internally, and I hate seeing people thrown money in the bin...

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the info. I am not able to really work on it myself, mainly because I am in a wheelchair and don't have anyone to really help. This and I need it done to go out of town for Christmas.

The price is for all the work removed/reinstalled.

I don't know exactly what is wrong with it, but I will definitely find out when I pick it up tomorrow. I basically just need it fixed. It has been burning out front seals, and leaking pretty bad.

Well, I'm not a transmission specialist and I don't know what would cause it to burn out front seals (maybe low on fluid due to the leak ? or maybe the torque converter ?) ... if it was mine, I would get a second opinion and quote from a five-star Chrysler dealer.

Leaks are common with high mileage vehicles ... I just got my front main seal replaced because the crank was spraying oil all over the front end and out the back onto the rear of the oil pan and transmission ... my engine is okay ... and it certainly doesn't need to be rebuilt because of an oil leak.

Now if you said it wouldn't go into reverse ... or took a long time to shift from 1st to 2nd, or would shift hard and clunk or make funny sounds ... then I would be inclined to have someone open up and look at the transmission---but only after the TCU was given a clean bill of health.

Now ... let's just say it does need to be rebuilt:

I would be wary of a "brand x" transmission shop declaring a leak constitutes a "rebuild" ... then proceeds to go through your AW4 ... and you take a long distance trip---you get stuck and there's no recourse other than towing it back to the shop that did the work.

At least with Chrysler ... the 90-day warranty would be honored by any dealer.

For a complete rebuild with installation $1000 is a great price. Just to give you an idea, our minivan was $2300 to rebuild and I called around. You would spend half that in parts to do it yourself and not have a warrantee. If it is a reputable shop with a warrantee then go for it.

If you do the work yourself you probably won't need a warranty.

I wish I was as good a mechanic as Pancake so that I knew that each and every part I put in was going to last forever. If you don't believe that getting a warranty is important whether you buy the parts yourself or have someone else put them in then either you have money to waste or like doing work twice. Still, $1000 for a rebuilt tranny with installation and warranty is a great price.

A quick note - if it's just the front pump/input seal (the one most likely to wear out - it rides on the torque converter and is ALWAYS spinning!) a full teardown and rebuild of the box is not necessary. The transmission will need to be dismounted, the torque converter set aside on the bench, and the front pump seal is now available for repair. Reinstall the TC, reinstall the transmission/tcase/driveshafts, and you're on your way. Call it four hours' actual work - IF the guy takes time out for a beer...
