Last night I got in my Jeep and tried to start it, all the electronics turned on but nothing from the engine. The second time I turned the key it started right up like nothing happened. Then this moring same thing except it took 3 trys to get it to start. Its a 99 XJ and the starter is about 1.5 years old. Please tell me I don't need a new starter after 1.5 years.:helpme:

Automatic? Then check the neutral safety switch. If it happens again, wiggle the shifter, or shift into neutral from park, and see if it changes.

It could also be the ignition switch, but the NSS is the first suspect.

In any case, you should also check all your battery cables, and clean the terminals.

yea, I would check the NSS. I have an override on my starter so that I can start it when the NSS fails me. I have seen this on a few XJs. I can't tell you how to rig it up because it was done by the previous owner.

to do this, you just have to splice into the green wire that goes to the starter. Then run the splice to a pushbutton and to power on the other end. I have a couple on mine setup with only the pushbutton. It works well and after about 3 years, I have only had one button go bad.

or,

you could splice into the harness for the NSS and run it to a toggle to make sure the right connection is made to ensure the computer knows it is in park.
