Should be easy. They use the same bell housing bolt pattern, and the early 4-cyls came with the same transmissions as the 2.8L so you can use your existing tranny and transfer case.
Better bet is to change to a 3.4L from an early 90's camaro, with the TBI from a 4.3L Astro van and the engine computer from a 2.8L Trooper Should be 100% bolt in.
Like would you go FI at the same time? Since you have a manual you don't have any flexplat/TC issues either. I am in the process of putting a 94 YJ engine in my 84 and it isn't bolt in. I believe as long as you get the 2.5 from an XJ you will not have the problems I am having.
