The other day when trying to start my heep, it took a couple of seconds longer than usual. It finally turned over but the voltage stayed around 9-10 volts and the "GEN" light was on. It stayed like this for about 10 seconds and then the light went off and the volts went up.

This is a 96 with stock alt and starter and with a 18 month old red top.

The first possibility I can think of is that after the extra drain on the battery, the load on the alternator caused the belt to slip. The serpentine belt doesn't always squeal when it slips. Depending on mileage, you might also have worn brushes in the alternator, less likely, but something to keep an eye on if it happens again.
