Disk brake dust shields- need them?

I picked up my 8.8 from the wrecking yard on Friday, and now I know why they call them the "wrecking yard".. Everything was fine when I selected this axle but I had to come back after they pulled it. Well, they dragged it across the gravel and pretty must destroyed the dust shields for the disks. Question is- find replacements or just leave them off?

Thats perty much what they do, shield dust. I wouldn't worry about them too much.
Whoa, back up.
The 8.8 dust shields are also the mounting plates for the e-brake shoes so you need them for that.
I just cut the outer circumference off the shields, leaving the brake shoe area.

That is exactly what I was contemplating doing. I tried to straighten them out but they are a mess. Thanks.
