97 XJ 3 inch Rustys wit T case drop, new owner, Jeep pops or jolts into Drive/Reverse

It is a process of elimination, engine and transmission mounts are a good place to start. Do you know how to inspect these components?

Inspect for broken rubber? know one engine mount is ready to be replaced soon. The Tranny mount is questionable. My main question is, are these valid reasons as to why it would Jolt like this. Which you've basically answered. Thanks. I'll start with replacing these and see where it goes.

Inspect for broken rubber?
Looks can be deceiving.

Have someone sit in the Jeep with the engine running, foot on the brake so it does not go anywhere. Open the hood, have your assistant shift from drive to reverse. Watch the top of the engine for movement with the transmission shifting forward to reverse, and back. If it move more than a couple inches, start looking at the individual mounts. After you get comfortable with this, add some throttle to the procedure.

The engine must be carbureted to idle that high. Just make sure you have the transmission in gear before loading the drive train.

You betcha!
