I have a 97 xj that is an ex police jeep. I pulled the motor and whatnot and when i put it back in the alternator is puttin out about 30 volts. is it possible that since they had to run a extra lights and radios and whatnot that they put a different alternator on there? also what other things are different than a "normal" xj?

30 volts bad, 13.8 volts good. More lights etc... would be more amps.

A firefighter wrote a letter in to one of those offroad magazines asking about a 24v truck they had, and he wanted to convert it to 12v but his boss wouldn't let him. Maybe it's just a 24v XJ!?!?

I think he would have noticed if it had two batteries.
