Bought a 1996 i6 4x4 auto with 179k on it about a new ago with a head gasket issue, was able to drive it home and the cruise worked fine. I drove it til about 6 months ago and finally decided to put another motor in it. Did the motor swap, now the cruise light comes on and it sets/will hold speed for a few seconds, then gradually the speed starts to decrease. What have I done? I've read where the cruise works off a vacuum so I'm guessing I've screwed up somewhere there...

I'd say you have a vacuum leak to the cruise servo, especially since it gradually decreases. If the servo to throttle cable was broken or disconnected, it wouldn't work at all.

Check the vacuum line from the vac reservoir to the cruise servo for leaks, cracks, rubs etc.
