2000 XJ. Has anyone ever replaced the quarter glass in a 2dr. XJ ?
I mean the large ones on each side behind the doors.
I want to put in ones that slide open a bit.
Thanx for any help.

The quarter windows are the nice old fashioned non-glued type, and should be pretty easy to replace. To remove an old one, after removing any extra pressed-in plastic molding, you start by getting inside and pushing the inner lip of the gasket past the glass toward the outside, and gradually pass that lip to the outside of the pinch weld in the body as you push outward on the glass. Start at the top, so that the glass is still held at the bottom and doesn't just plop out on the ground. If you are sure you have a good gasket to spare, the quick way to get it out is to take a utility knife and cut the gasket. This guarantees that you don't stress the glass. Two people are handy here, but if you're careful you'll see when the point comes when you can step outside and just pull the glass the rest of the way up and out.

To replace, you put the gasket on the glass first, then put a long piece of thick string into the groove that goes over the pinch weld, long enough so that the ends of the string cross each other. Again it helps to have two people doing this job. You then hold the glass against the car body from outside, and carefully pull on the string to pull the inside flange of the gasket inside. If you do this right, it is very quick and easy. The hatch glass is easier to do single handed, because you can rest the glass on the open hatch and just pull the string.
