Deschutes Resource Management Plan

The Prineville District Office of the BLM is now "accepting" comment on the Upper Deschutes Resource Management Plan. This plan covers a wide area in Crook Co., North and East of Bend, including the Millican OHV area. Alternative 7, the BLM's "Preferred Alternative" would trade seasonal closures in the OHV area for permanent closures across a wide area of Crook Co. I haven't even had a chance to visit many of the proposed closures, but as one example: If you want to visit Badlands Butte (the highest point in the badlands area) instead of driving a perfectly good road to the butte, you'll now need to hike 2.5 miles one way, again on a perfectly good road. Alternative 1 is the "No Change" alternative, which is better than any of the other alternatives that I read. For more information call Greg Curry at the Prineville BLM office 541-416-6711. You can mail comments to BLM, 3050 NE Third Street, Prineville OR 97754. Please write your legislators also! By Jan. 15, 2004 the BLM hopes to have this area locked up forever so act now.
