If I'm holding a good torque converter in my hands and I shake it side to side, should I be able to hear or see the internals moving around? 97 aw4...

Yes, meaning it's allowable for it to move back and forth, but it's not a definitive test. Take the converter to a tranny shop, they'll tell you for sure...or follow the testing procedure in the "book". Should turn freely one way, not so freely, if at all the other way.
