Do you have to do all of the aligning top dead center if you are just replacing the can sensor cap? I don't see where it would throw anything off unless you replace the whole shaft.

I think he's talking about a 2000-01 distributor-less system cam position sensor, in which he would be correct as the rotor is "indexed"!

So I can just replace the cap without indexing? I'm not pulling the shaft. I meant to say cam bit the phone changed it to can. Its a 2001.

Yes, just replace the cap, the actual sensor part. If you don't bother the oil pump drive part (aluminum body) you don't have to reindex.
