The lower Moog joint is what is causing that extra gap. Moog has become junk.

I put MOOG's in my 01 XJ and they failed in less than 30,000 miles. Fortunately Advance refunded me the entire purchase price and I replaced them with Spicers which have been fine. I don't know what you paid for the MOOG joints, but retail they are like $240 whereas a complete set of Spicers are around $100-110 and last a lot, lot longer.

I used these ball joints in mine, little tip on install, get tension built up with the press when installing then whack the C with a hammer
