Engine Miss

NWAP

NAXJA Forum User
01 Cher with 4.0L. Runs great, starts up no problem. When I shut it off after running for awhile, and then start it while it's still hot, the eng rumbles and misses for around one minute before if starts running on all cylinders. Pulled the codes and got a intermitent miss on cyl 3. Anyone have experience with this? Also I just bought the rig around 2 months go and put fresh plugs in at that time.

This is a pretty common problem on 1999 and newer XJs. You perfectly describe the CLASSIC symptoms of this problem. The condition is caused by heat from the exhaust manifold that following engine shut down migrates to the area around injector #3 and causes fuel vapor to form within the injector. This causes a momentary misfire of cylinder #3 until the fuel vapor is cleared of injector #3.

Installing an insulator sleeve TSB 1803103 lowers the injector #3 temperature to a point below which the fuel will not vaporize. Only costs a few bucks and very easy to install. Zip to your local Jeep dealer to purchase it. Bring this tsb number along for reference. Good luck and post back if you decide to do this and what your results are.....

Does anyone have a Photo of the insulator boot installed on the injector for reference?
