Re-padding floor console lid

Anyone ever try this? I've worn a hard spot where my elbow sits and can't find a replacement. Looks like I can unscrew the base of the lid and then *maybe* peel back the vinyl cover, scrape the OEM foam out, and restuff it with maybe a cut closed cell foam.

While I'm at it, I have the same problem with the driverside door arm rest, but doesn't seem I can get to the inside of that one.

Thoughts?

You don't mention the model year, but there are all sorts of center console lids on ebay for less than $50....
