95 pilot bearing

Anybody have any ideas on this pilot bearing question. I bought what AutoZone said is a 4.0l 95 jeep Cherokee pilot bearing. The bearing diameter goes on the output shaft to the transmission ok but has way too much diameter slop for the crank on the motor. I went to Checker and it’s just the opposite. The inside of the bearing has too much diameter slop, but the outside bearing is nice and snug for the crank. If anybody has any ideas I could use your help? Thanks

Calipers. Measure the ID of the crank, the OD of the pilot shaft.

Run, don't walk, away from Autozone to a real parts store and ask them to look up the appropriate pilot bearing.

That is "Old School"--when a Parts Man will actually look up parts rather than a counter monkey scratching its head and pointing at the computer display while hopping around and grunting "ooh-ooh" "eeh-eeh".

I did some web searching and found that the 88.5-91 AX15 tranny has a smaller end on the input shaft that goes into the pilot bearing than the 92-04 AX15s do. The bearing that went over the tranny but had too much slop in the crank needs a bushing along with the bearing. From what I read the bushing goes in first then the bearing. Some guys have a machine shop machine a bushing for them to make it work. I found this while searching:

Here's some tech info. for anyone who owns a 4.0 XJ with a 5-speed manual tranny:

The 5-speed manual transmission is the light-duty Peugeot BA10/5 in the '87-'89.5 4.0 XJ, the medium duty Aisin-Warner AX15 in the '89.5-'99 4.0 XJ, and the medium-duty New Venture Gear NVG3550 in the '00-'01 4.0 XJ.
When carrying out engine swaps (either another 4.0 or a stroker), selection of the correct pilot bearing can be a headache. The details below will make choosing a pilot bearing simple:

'87-'89.5 BA 10/5: OEM pilot bearing 33004041 for '87-'91 4.0 engine, Advance Adapters pilot bushing 716120 for '92-'04 4.0 engine. Upgrade transmission to AX15 or NVG3550 for stroker engine swap.

'89.5-'91 AX15: OEM pilot bearing 33004041 for '87-'91 4.0 engine or stroker, Advance Adapters pilot bushing 716120 for '92-'04 4.0 engine.

'92-'99 AX15 and NVG3550: OEM pilot bearing 53009180AB for '87-'91 engine or stroker, OEM pilot bearing 53009180AB or 53009181 for '92-'04 4.0 engine.

I also found this :
Just an update for anyone swapping a 92+ 4.0 in front of a 91 and older AX-15...no commercially available bushing/bearing including the ones from Advance Adapters or Novak are the correct dimensions to fit the inner hole on the 92+ 4.0. You will need to take a larger pilot bushing and have it turned down. The MOPAR one with the puck also won't seat properly.

I looked at AA web site. The 716120 part fits in the out larger crank pocket but has issues in letting the tranny mount up so some have the 716159 AA part machined to 1 inch OD. From what I have read the older ax15 end shaft diameter is .590" and the 92 and newer crank hole is 1" ID. It may be possible to find a bearing with those dimensions at a bearing supply place. If not machining a bushing would be the way to go. I also found this :i had this happen one time, also, and i *think* i used a pilot BUSHING from a '72-'75 CJ5 with the T15 transmission.
