Removing head bolts one at a time to replace

I have read about this procedure on other car forums where guys have replaced the original bolts/studs by removing one at a time thinking that they wouldn't break the seal.

I am installing a 96+ valve cover on a 91 4.0 and would like to get the two middle studs from a 96+ to have the locating dowels. I realize that I don't have to do this (I have converted about 10 without doing it) but I would like to if possible.

Has anyone tried this on a 4.0L?

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks,
Collin
