big brake upgrades for cherokee?

Yes, call Black Magic. I had (son has) Vanco brake kit on the D30, and it fit 15" wheels. This was on a '95.

I'd try and do the WJ brakes - you get better steering to. Also, about the WJ booster swap, I did it on my MJ, I wen't from oh-shit tail lights to being able to lock up all 4. It made a HUGE difference for me.

theres the wj knuckle swap using wj knuckles/calipers/rotors plus you get crossover steering out of it( this is what i run and stops good with the v8 pushing it, clears my 15" steelies with about 3/16" to spare)

there are calipers that will mount up to 1990 and earlier knuckles but you'll likely need 16-17" wheels

Call Blaine at Black Magic.

I have run Vanco front brakes for ten years with no complaints, they work!
My 2001 has the 15" kit, with 48-mm dual calipers, Centrex rotors and Black Magic pads.
The brakes work great cold and even better when hot.

The rear has ZJ discs but didn't make much of a difference, since most of the braking is performed by the front brakes. Too much brake in the rear may cause rear wheel lockup, in wet conditions.

Thanks, I spoke with Blaine he said I'll have to change out thje upper ball joint, unit bearing, and possibly the axel shafts to post-90 equipment.

I'm googling around, the only other decent kit I see is wilwood's:

Has anyone used this? every retailer site I find that sells them swears they fit on stock 15" rims (I'm running 15" aftermarket rims), but I called wilwood and they said 16" rims are required... anyone use this kit with a stock wheel?

This might help.

Personally at $1k I would pass on this kit, because it requires that you use the old style knuckles. So it you ever decided to wanted to move to crossover steering this kit could not be retained. You could do the whole WJ swap for what the Wilwood would cost and being on 35's you should be doing that anyways.

Having built a custom wilwood brake setup... I would also just go WJ. I just wish I would have known at the time that the WJ was an option.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm going with the black magic set up + a 1995 MC/booster.

I ran the Vanco big brake kit for a couple of years, but sold it and upgraded to all WJ components for the added steering benefits. Hands down, best bang for the buck for improved braking and awesome steering geometry. Worthy of noting, I also have TJ Discs on my rear D44, but the WJ setup provides more value, as the XJ braking bias is 70/30 front/rear.

I too have to agree that upgrading those bits and going black magic is the correct path for you.

I've installed several black magic kits. Blaine puts together well engineered kits that come with excellent instructions and very good documentation.

good to know.. I pulled the trigger. Should get everything early next week. Between the brakes and new skids, I should be able to make it at least a few times to Rauche/tar hollow this year :)

Please post up pics and part #'s f/ Blaine. I browsed his website for a few minutes yesterday and couldn't actually find the KIT for all that's needed... only parts. Could be I'd have to order all the parts separately but it's more likely I just couldn't find the kit. I've been running Black Magic brake pads on my XJ and on my wive's KJ for years and love them! Upgrading my '01 XJ to the Vanco big brake kit has always been on my want list...
