12 volt compressor -- solenoid or relay?

I have a 12 volt, 3/4 hp puma compressor in my cherokee I use to air up.
I currently have it connected to a solenoid, which is connected to a switch.
IS there any reason I need to use the solenoid, or to keep things simple, can I just use a high-amp relay?

A "solenoid" is a relay. If it works, and you understand it, don't fix it.

yeah, it works, I understand it, just trying to go a little more compact.

Duh on the current draw-- stupid me --- pump is drawing max 46 amps @ 12 volts... relay just won't cut it.

You can get high amp relay's. I don't know how much more compact they will be.
