So I'm looking at buying a 96 Cherokee, 4.0, auto trans and unknown t case for 400 bucks. Guys say the only problem is it needs a trans. Would the trans out of my 89 swap right over to the 96 or would I have to get the 96 trans rebuilt?

Excellent, but very long AW4 transmission thread at http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1053970. The 96 AW4 will have a different spline count.

Ask what the transmission problem is, as it may just be a common solenoid problem. If you can unplug the trans computer or pull it's fuse (I don't recall if the 96 had a separate fuse for it), and it shifts manually using shifter, and the fluid doesn't smell burned, it's likely not a mechanical problem.

If the rest of it's in good shape, $400 is a good deal even if you have to spend $100 for a used AW4 and a weekend to swap it out.

This is a good right up. For the transfer case I'd probably find an older 231 or build a 241 dhd with a slip yoke and the correct input and put it behind my current aw4. Be a lot easier than fixing my current xj that won't run for unknown reasons. Definitely gonna try to buy the 96 though.
