Gear shifter not staying in park

The gear shifter on my 90 will sometimes lock in park but other times it won't. It is almost like it isn't positioned correctly but I'm not sure what part would be broken. Any help would be great.

the shifter cable is out of adjustment, you have to lengthen it at the adjustment beside the bell housing underneath. only a fraction of an inch.

not its been like this for years and years. get my beauty back from the old tranny shop tomorrow. Cant wait!

if you push the shifter foward, will it click into place and lock? if so the cable is out of adjustment. my 89 used to do the same thing

that is exactly right yes it just doesnt go all the way forward apparently. Thanks, but how do i adjust it? Can u help?

take the bracket that holds the shifter cable to the trans on the underside, and give it a little wack upward a couple of times this works for me on the ones i've seen in the shop. just a little at a time and keep checking it until it locks in place.
