Alright guys, I have a 1998 4wd transmission I'm about to pull to put into a 2001 2wd. I know I need to pull the TCM with it, but do I also need to pull the wiring harness as well? Or will the wiring harness in the 2wd just plug and play with the 98 4wd?

1998-2001 didn't have any transmission changes that I know of. I'm pretty sure it will plug right in. I don't think you'll need to swap the TCM either.

The 1998 AW4 does not have the input shaft speed sensor, that the 1999-2001 XJ's PCM requires.
Without it, your 2001 will throw a CEL code and may even go into 'limp home' mode. If Ohio require emissions testing, it will not pass.
You need a 1999-2001 transmission.

The front sensor was added in 1998 as well as the rear sensor changing pulse/rev. Being a cross-over year and a 2wd he's starting with, it's possible it's a 1997 setup though.
