decent inexpensive OBD code reader

Question on using a OBDII reader to see what's going on with the car... I know that Torque shows mpg and fuel related stuff.

My gas needle seems to be a little wonky... below half a tank the needle will sometimes go down 1/4 of a tank and hang out there for awhile, and eventually go back up where it's supposed to be. Guessing my sensor in the gas tank is bad?

So... with the reader being used via laptop or Android phone, will I get the "real" MPG readings or will it still be wonky due to the sensor? And same goes for adding an OHC with the fuel mileage stuff as well.

The gas tank volume gauge sensor system is not read by the ECU/PCM, it is not used for MPG number crunching because it is not at all accurate. It does not have the precision needed. The ECU/PCM would estimate MPGs based on fuel pressure (which is probably assumed based on the design specs), and the injector open time which is under the ECU/PCM control. But it all assumes the fuel pressure is normal and assumes the injectors are not leaking or sticking, or partly stopped up with crud.
So the ECU/PCM does not read anything that would report MPGs, it just estimates fuel flow based its outputs to the fuel injectors and used an expect OEM spec fuel pressure to calculate an estimated MPG.

well if anyone can share some info on installing the drivers for the USB version of this device it would be great.
(ELM327)
i cant get it to work on an XP Pro system or vista.
i plugged it into the vista machine it searched for drivers said it found and installed them but then it would not work with any of the programs of the vehicle.

Have you tried assigning the COM port manually?

Here are my old email notes from the guy I bought mine from:

Also note that in the device manage in xp it does not indicate the com port number. In my case it was try and try and try until I found it at com 4.
It then recognized it and came to life."

I am looking for a good software upgrade for them ( I already have one) , I need a software package for them that can show each cylinder firing data, but have found non as yet?

The one I have will show stuff like Cyl #1 timing advance, but only Cyl #1, the O2 reading but not by cylinder, etc. I know the data is there, and available, but the software I have tried so far is just not very good, beyond minor gross data.
