so at work i grabbed a mountain dew out of the cooler as a customer was coming in. i set the drink down on the counter to help them out and so on. i get done helping them and a dude comes in needing two car batteries for him and his wifes cars. i deal with him, take a few drinks out of the drink i haven't been able to pay for yet ya know. i got outside install the new batteries and do my thing. well i get inside to wash my hands and as i come around the corner the manager is like, "josh we're gunna have to talk to you".

get to the back office and the manager is saying he's got to send me home for not paying for the $1.05 drink. sorry i was out helping customers and never got a chance to pay for it. he said he had to call loss prevention and report it and that i'd have to go home and call tomorrow to see if i even have a f****ing job. so basically i might be getting fired for doing my job and not being able to have a chance to pay for a dollar drink.

the assistant manager who "told" on me... i've seen the dude open up a brand new buffer box and give his buddy the buffing pad out of it and then defect the entire thing. apparently that's ok though. he wouldn't even let me go pay for the drink. he said, "as much as i'd like to do that i just can't"

sorry guys, but wow i'm really pissed right now

F***d up! They should have just let you pay for it. Thats really stupid especially because you were helping the people not just chilling there. If you do end up getting fired tell the guy to go XXXX himself and tell on the assistant manager just for being an asshole. Thats so wrong makes me mad just hearing about it. Where are you? i may come help you beat these guys up :D

if i do get canned, i'm going to tell them to go do a cycle count on the rent-a-tool balljoint presses and then ask burt (the commercial parts guy) where the third one is.

well what i'm thinking is that they're trying to use this as an example to show the other guys that they "mean business". the manager has been writing a lot of guys up the last couple of weeks for all sortsa small stuff like a guy being 10 minutes late because he got stuck at a railroad crossing.

XgeekstarX
October 12th, 2006, 18:20
ive worked there about a year and a half. i'm pretty sure i'm not losing my job, i'm thinking he just sent me home as an example to the other guys that "he's not playing around" anymore. if this guy at the store i worked at before didn't get fired for losing a $1200 change order, then i'm pretty sure i wont lose mine over a friggin soda.

I would start looking for a new job. Its one thing if your stealing, but a soda. Soda's should be in a vending machine, if not then they are just asking for loss.
What a petty thing to try to control soda costs. Seems like your boss doesnt have much to do.

just my opinion on crappy management.

the manager got came down REALLY hard on by the district manager (who im decent friends with). apparently he got called out on not doing his job and letting the store get out of control. i think this is his (the managers) way of trying to regain control.

i told quite a few people that even if i don't get fired i'm definitely going to be looking for a new job. i don't want to work for a company who can't understand that i didn't want to interupt the customers needs so i could pay for a damn soda.

The Jewel grocery stores around here have that policy, and it's backed by hte union too. I knew a kid that got canned over a $.50 can of store brand pop (is a convienient way of getting rid of a problematic or just disliked employee) and another that didn't know about this little rule till he was pulled aside for shoplifting food.

well i just got fired over not paying for a half drinken mountain dew. the manager goes, "you had a 30 minute window from the time you took it out of the cooler until we talked to you". i told him, "during that 30 minutes i was out putting two batteries in two different vehicles. i didn't even get a chance to leave the sink after washing my hands to even get up to the counter".

anyone need a do-boy at a fab shop or anything? as for the dew, who knows where it's at. most of the time someone throws them away before you even get a chance to finish them.

Then your manager is a poor manager, regardless of your friendship. It sounds as if the company you work for has big problems, and is run inefficiently. The question you have to ask yourself is...Do I wan't to be subject to job insecurity, as a result of poor management?

I don't know why anyone would go thru the trouble to fire someone for allegedly stealing a soda in florida....you dont need a reason to dismiss someone in florida. There are no regs protecting anyones right to work.

Now if its a union joint, there may be union hoops to jump thru, but ole joe blow has no rights.

There is another side to it tho....if someone has been working there for at least 90 days, they become eligable for unemployment (of which the former employer has to pay 50%) unless the guy was terminated for a serious infraction like theft.

As far as the alleged soda theft...are you talking about loose drinks in like an igloo cooler or a regular refrigerator??? if they are selling them like that, They need a permit from (i think) the agriculture commision. If im wrong, look on any commercial soda machine's permit sticker to get the right department.

This is very clutch information to have in your back pocket if your situation escalates to this level. Whether or not they have a permit to sell soda, is very key.

no, it was the drink cooler next to the register sort of like at a gas station. i just grabbed a drink out and set it next to my station on the parts counter and took a few drinks out of it as i helped them out, then i had to go put two batteries in this guys truck and his wifes suburban... i come back inside and it's like i stole the bank deposit or something.

Sounds like Auto Zone to me. I saw a guy get fired over a 99 cent set of fingernail clippers. LP is no joke. They all roll up in their white ford tauruses. They will take each individual employee to the back and try to get them to squeal on each other. Then some kid lost his job for forgetting about a .99 set of fingernail clippers he had under the counter.

If youre on good terms with the DM that will help. Youre a redshirt im assuming? if so, you are easily replaceable. Not trying to be harsh, I just know how Auto Zone LP is. Theyre shitheads.

X infinity.

18 months of service vs 50 cents? There's something very wrong with this picture. If they are not trying to pin some of that past loss on you now, that's what you will be missing.

When you speak with the district manager, point this out. He would make a better reference, and really needs to be skeptical of any information he gets from the store manager. I wouldn't work under those conditions, I'd move on.

Over a year of getting to work on time, applying your-self, taking higher levels of responsibility (leadership), without prior disciplinary action? Take the hit now, have yourself established before that inept manager beats you out of a decent job by getting canned first.
