I've got a bit of money to spend and I've always wanted to learn to weld. I don't particularly have any projects in mind already just that it would be awesome to know how to do that and be able to do at when I wanted to.

The nicest welder I was looking at was a millermatic 211 with autoset.

Question 1: How do I go about getting gas in Raleigh? I don't really want to pay a monthly or yearly fee since I'll probably not use it much in the beginning. Mostly just learning and small projects for the jeep once in awhile so mostly the welder will be sitting collecting dust and not used weekly.

Question 2: For someone not looking at building a cage anytime soon would I be better off getting a smaller welder to start with and just tacking things that are larger so someone else can do the welds on thicker stuff?

I've been welding for 3 years and I'm still learning. Different positions and thicknesses.

Welding is a load of fun; fusing steel! I've got a DC stick welder so I'm going to bow to the more experienced to answer your questions on gas.
However, I'm convinced that learning one machine that will do all of your future projects is worthy of consideration.

Good luck and enjoy.

IIRC i just had to buy a bottle and then have it refilled. There is a place on Capital Blvd that did it all for me. I just dropped off my bottle and they just exchanged it. I think the upfront cost is a little high but well worth it in the end. Its been the better part of 4 years since i've been there so forgive me for not being able to get a name for you!
