My son is looking at a '94 ZJ (119k miles) with the V8 and Quadra-Trac xfer case. Does anyone have any experience with this era of Grand? Is there anything we should be on the lookout for?

Thanks!

The 249 transfer case is well known for the VC going bad. Most do a 242 or 231 conversion.

The 5.2 is known to develop a plenum gasket problem requiring replacement. If your consuming oil this usually the case.

Couple research forums..

My buddy wheels a 95 ZJ on 33's. An ex-buddy had a 94 with a 5.2. Overall they are great but with any vehicle there are common problems. They flex like crazy, even stock. The 5.2 gets it moving mighty quick and they are comfortable to drive! I'd say at 120k its still got a lot of life left!

Are there any symptoms that would present themselves during a test-drive?

Yes, a feeling of being in 4wd while on pavement type feel. Because the VC is not "differentiating".

A swap is not hard, you need to swap in the 249 input gear to a donor case unless you use a ZJ donor case.
