My 1987 xj has a mounting place and wired plug overhead between the sunvisors. All I have is a rectangular hole and the female end of a plug. What goes there? Thanks.

Probably keyless entry (remote key fob.)

I think it was standard to have the wiring on power lock setups, but that doesn't mean you'd have the option. However, if you've got the cutout in your headlie, and it looks like something was mounted there, then you have the option of replacing it or not replacing it (it's up to you - locks should work with or without the keyless part.)
