I'd say the top after you remove the battery and battery tray. Although you will have to do some wrenching from the bottom. From my parking lot replacement experience I found the easiest way to pull it out was through the top with the battery and tray removed.
I vote a mix of top and bottom, with the alternator coming out the bottom.
I have a 98', and after removing a whole lot of extra stuff on the top (battery, shroud, fan, belt) that was in the way, I removed the wires from the bottom, and the large bolt that goes though the alternator ears is on the bottom, so it was just easier to reach up and unbolt it.
I was in a campground parking lot, laying on my back with it pouring cats and dogs. So maybe staying out of the rain had something to do with my decission
